New Study: Healthcare Retirements Impact Hospital Activity in Portugal

A new study by Eduardo Costa, Judite Gonçalves, and the Nova SBE Public Policy Institute’s Deputy Academic Director Pedro Martins reveals how health professional retirements disrupt operations in Portuguese public hospitals.

Published in Social Science & Medicine, “Retirements and organizational performance: Mixed methods evidence from Portuguese public hospitals” shows that staff retirements cause significant shifts in hospital activity. These disruptions are particularly severe in smaller hospitals and those with less experienced remaining staff. The authors urge policymakers to implement pre-emptive hiring and proactive transition planning to safeguard care continuity.
